Create Meaningful Handmade Gifts with Bead Animals for Every Occasion
August 7, 2026Step by Step Guide on How to Create Bead Animals
September 30, 2026Choosing the right beads can affect the overall look and difficulty level of your finished bead animal project. Beginners tend to choose beads by color only. However you should consider the size shape and hole size of the bead you choose. Larger and more numerous holes in a bead make it easier to work with and allow the beads to fit together to form more intricate designs.
Think About Bead Size
Smaller beads are useful for achieving a more intricate pattern while larger beads can be easier to work with, For beginners larger beads are a good choice to work with, They provide enough area for the pattern to be visible without making it a large and unneccessarily heavy project.
Go for a Beginner Bead
Plastic and acrylic beads can be a good choice for first time bead animal projects because they are light weight and easy to work with. They come in many fun colors and designs. For a finished project with a more polished look and design that is detailed glass beads can be an attractive choice. However they may be heavier and more fragile. Save specialty beads such as beads with different colors that glow or are vehicle shapes for when you learn more advance patterns.
Pay Attention to Shape
Different shaped beads give you the freedom to create so much more! One of the easiest styles for beginners is the round bead, These beads move smoothly along the string and line up to create neat patterns. Faceted beads have sparkle and beads with shapes can add eyes ears or other decorations to your project.
Bead animals are a great project to showcase how different shapes look together. In the beginning try to control the shape variety in your project. Using irregular amounts of shapes can make your project look more complicated than it is.
Check the Hole Size
Each bead has a hole in it to accommodate the string cord or wire. If the hole is too big beads will move around and if it’s too small then beads become difficult to string.
To avoid problems try stringing the beads you’re considering buying with the string cord or wire you’re going to use. This takes the guessing game out of it.
Use Color Strategically
Color helps make your project identifiable as the creature it is as well as making it visually appealing. Instead of using a whole rainbow consider just a few main colors.
Animal bead projects are a great opportunity to learn color theory as you can use colors that compliment and even create a real looking animal or project that pops with bright colors.
Keep the Finished Animal Lightweight
A great thing about this project is that beads can double as charms and keychains backpack decorations and more! Similarly lightweight bead animals are easy to make and easy to carry around.
Easier for beginners to see and handle are the beads varied by size and material color and shape while still producing cute bead animals that last. No need for complicated crafting.
